Plot[]
Rooftops 2 takes place immediately after Rooftops 1 ends, having the team arriving back in their camp in Western Greece to recollect themselves and study all the intel they have gathered from the Russian occupied town in Italy.
Two days later, SPi surprises Task Force 99 with a drill, faking an attack to their base with Loz. The team proved to be unprepared and disappointed SPi as they were disorganized and ineffective in taking proper action. SPi initiated a training course that would last a couple of weeks that would involve shooting range, obstacle course, and more. The team worked hard and they passed all the tests regaining SPi's trust in them for the moment.
During that time, Loz had studied all the intel they had collected thoroughly and came up with a plan to stop Romanov's evil plans. SPi and Loz debrief the team about the operation, and on November 7, 2011, they initiate the operation. SPi secretly voices his concerns about the plan to Loz showing that he still doesn't fully trust his team to make it through. His biggest fear is to lose his men, but Loz encourages him by reminding him that with this plan, they're one step ahead.
A few days before the operation began, back in Romanov's main nuclear base in Greece, the last remaining forces from Sicily return. The sergeant in command informs Romanov about their defeat and how Major Misha was killed and that the S.A.S. took his cell phone. That enraged Romanov, causing him to bring his elite forces from Russia, a squad of heavily armored troops as his personal guards, under the command of his step-son Yuri along with more of his regular elite troops. This time Romanov was ready for anything.
The operation commences. Stalker 1 consists of SPi, Loz, and Alex, while Stalker 2 is Pan, who has already infiltrated an enemy seaside supply depot controlled by pirates hired by Romanov. Stalker 1 deploys ashore via boat, sneaking into the supply depot. After a brief stealth encounter, they go loud, fighting their way to Pan. Once they clear the outpost and regroup with Pan, they get into supply crates so they later get loaded as stowaways on Romanov's train. Pan will use his disguise to sneak the crates on the train.
They successfully drive the truck with the stowaways out of the supply outpost to the train station. But the security levels there are higher so Pan can't enter. The crates with SPi, Loz and Alex are locked inside a warehouse to be loaded with the next train in which Romanov won't be in. Now Pan has taken the task to go downtown, upgrade his security level, and enter the station area to let the team out of the warehouse and onto the train, and all that, before the train departs.
Pan manages to gain the trust of local sergeants and increase his clearance level by doing various chores for them. He reaches the station area, lets the team out of the warehouse and on the train. SPi tells Pan to regroup with the rest of Task Force 99 and cause a diversion near the town so the train has less reinforcements once they go loud. SPi, Loz and Alex made it on the train in time. A while later, Pan has regrouped with Task Force 99 and initiate the diversion. Once they successfully divert enemy attention to them, SPi, Loz and Alex start fighting on the train. They are on the last wagon fighting to reach the front wagons where Romanov is supposed to be.
After a long and brutal fight on the moving train, they reach the front wagon right before the train engine. As they breach the door open, an explosion occurs, all three characters are stunned and laying on the floor of the empty wagon, Loz is killed by the blast. There's smoke on the destroyed doorway, two elite enemy troops enter pointing their guns to SPi and Alex. Then Romanov emerges through the smoke, lecturing SPi about his attempts against him. Romanov however, shows admiration for SPi's bravery and to honor him, he grants his last wish to know what this is all about. He starts narrating about how it all started.
We go 20 years ago, when Romanov and his older brother were sent on a mission to find and destroy a British intelligence base hidden in northern Russia. They were under the command of Captain Volkov, Romanov's late father's best friend. It was a snowy wasteland. Their division's tucks were assembled in an opening, preparing to attack the British base. Romanov's older brother, Ivan, is in charge of the attack. He and his squad including Grigori Romanov, were trusted with a secret objective, to retrieve the file A435 as it would seem important for the success of the operation and it would make them as heroes back home.
Romanov at this point described his hatred for his brother being obsessed with Russia and loving his nation. Romanov is a narcissist and a power hungry warlord. He doesn't care about ideals or honor or any nobility. He only wants to rule, command and conquer. This mission, was his chance to prove himself a hero, and rise in power, bringing him close to glory. Once they took over the British intelligence base, Romanov, killed his brother, took the file for himself, and found equipment with which he could protect himself against the rest of his platoon. Romanov went on a rampage, killing all his fellow Russian soldiers, including Captain Volkov. He was the last survivor and got all the glory for himself.
Romanov hates the world. He thinks that peace and freedom isn't helping the human race to evolve. He wants to cause a new world war and when the ashes settle, he will be on top to rule what remains. After his psychotic monologue, he tells SPi that he wants him to have a spectacular death, and leaves the scene with his men, leaving the mostly unharmed SPi, the leg injoured Alex, and the deceasted Loz alone in the train car. The train at this point had stopped on a large water bridge. SPi tries to revive Loz without result. An enemy attack helicopter shows up ready to fire at the bridge, and destroy it along with the train wagon where SPi is in. SPi quickly carries Alex on his back and runs out of the car wagon as the bridge gets destroyed.
Later, SPi regroups with Task Force 99, leaving Alex to rest in their helicopter, and informing the team of what had happened, while giving an inspiring speech as for how the world relies on them to stop Romanov from completing his evil plans. The team gets inspired, and proceeds to attack Romanov's main base. The base is heavily fortified, with a huge wall surrounding the main premises, and a small train docking station outside of it. That's where Task Force 99 hits first, disabling power and communications. They then reach the main gate and they try to hack it open with an enemy laptop they intercepted. As they were hacking the gate open, Romanov started intimidating SPi through the gate speakers, trying to plant fear in him that his cause is futile and that he will lose all his men one by one, which is SPi's biggest fear.
The gate is opening, and an enemy BMP armored vehicle emerges pinning down Task Force 99. When all seemed lost, a rocked comes out of nowhere and takes out the tank. Far in the distance, two chinook helicopters can be seen. Once the helicopters land, Antonio Sartini and a small team of local special forces arrive. Antonio Sartini apologizes to SPi for not helping earlier, and that he and his team are in SPi's services to defeat Romanov.
Everyone charges into the main base, and the final fight against Romanov's forces begins. When the main courtyard is cleared, more enemy forces arrive from outside the base. SPi orders everyone to hold them back and that he will handle Romanov himself. But Pan stays back, complaining about how irrational SPi is and how hate clouds his actions. Eventually, Pan convinces SPi to go with him, and they both enter the main building of the base to find Romanov.
As they go through the HQ they see Romanov in the opposite building. Pan loses his temper and gets out rushing to the other building. SPi tried to stop him but he failed. A heavily armored guard of Romanov exits the building shooting and critically wounding Pan. SPi starts fighting with the heavy guard in a courtyard with an empty helipad and takes him out, and gradually more and more heavy guards come out of Romanov's office building, when finally the last heavy guard, Captain Yuri, Romanov's step-son, enters the stage, in a bigger and stronger armored suit. Eventually SPi takes him out as well and finds Pan who was hiding under the helipad. Pan says that he'll make it back and that SPi will have to take out Romanov alone.
SPi enters Romanov's office building, and sees the nuclear missile silo on the other side of the camp, realizing that's where Romanov is hiding. Once he enters the nuclear silo structure, he finds himself locked in a chamber, and he can only see inside the silo through a small glass window. On the other side of that window stands Romanov. He is enraged that SPi took out his hole army, killed his step-son and ruined his vision of the future. He invites him to a fair fight man to man to settle it like men. SPi has to dispose of his weapons in an opening on the wall, and equip an STG-44 Advanced from a special casing in the chamber he is in. Once he is ready, he enters the silo room. A circular catwalk room that surrounds the missile silo. After a short intimidating dialogue between SPi and Romanov, they start fighting around the missile. After a long and brutal gunfight duel, Romanov is knocked out, severely wounded. With his last few breaths, he undermines SPi's efforts to prove he is a hero, by telling him that he is nothing but a cold blooded killer just like himself, inviting him to kill him in cold blood, proving his point. SPi doesn't give in. He proceeds on the nuclear missile console, redirects the nuke to go somewhere nobody will get hurt, and leaves, as Romanov submits to his wounds and perishes. SPi runs out of the nuclear silo as the flames of the launching nuke chase him, he closes the blast door at the last second, and turns around to find his team waiting for him and cheering for his victory.
Days later, back at their base, Task Force 99 and the local forces assemble in the front yard for Loz's funeral, where SPi gives his eulogy. Later, SPi stands near the shore, looking at the sunset. Pan approaches him and tries to comfort him about Loz. SPi finally expresses how his faith in his team has been restored, and as the rest of the team arrives, he tells everyone how proud he is of them, and they all gaze at the sunset.
Gameplay[]
Rooftops 2 Campaign is a significant upgrade from the original. With numerous new features and better-scripted sequences, it provides a much richer experience compared to the first one. Offering almost twice as many levels and nearly twice the playtime, along with numerous technical fixes on the original game, it stands as the largest and most complicated mod SPi has ever created.
The mod introduces up to seven brand-new campaign levels with a new story, custom dialogues, innovative scripted sequences, engaging gunfights, new weapons, improved textures, new NPC models, a completely reworked HUD, and menu UI reminiscent of the original MW2. Additionally, it features a new mod progression system with built-in achievements, collectibles, bonus unlockables, class creation, secret levels, and Easter eggs.
The core gameplay doesn't deviate from the well-established Call of Duty formula. It remains an action shooter game with plenty of intense gunfights. Rooftops 2 is the first mod where SPi has added a significant number of weapon assets from later Modern Warfare games, specifically the original Modern Warfare 2 and 3, almost entirely replacing all Call of Duty 4 weapons. Due to technical limitations of the game, only a certain number of weapons and attachments can be present in the same level. However, there are still plenty of guns and attachments to choose from. In one of the later levels, there is a class selection that allows the player to create their own classes before the final fight. An additional bonus is two extra classes unlocked if the player completes the secret level Easter egg and one more special weapon bonus if they reach 100% mod completion by collecting all achievements.
Rooftops 2 includes a substantial amount of dialogue, resulting in several long sequences where characters exchange conversations, as well as pre-recorded cutscenes. However, a skip system has been implemented for player convenience, allowing them to skip long and repetitive dialogues, making it much easier to navigate through the game.
Easter Eggs[]
The mod offers several interesting Easter eggs that usually provide completion bonuses as well as bonus content.
Primarily, there's an Easter egg where you have to find a secret character and collect a journal that gives you access to a whole new bonus level. Completing that level rewards players with an achievement.
Various collectibles are scattered across the levels, including Gold Bars, Biographies, and Audio Tapes, each providing different types of rewards. Gold Bars don't offer anything, but collecting Biographies unlocks character information in the Extras menu, while Audio Tapes unlock Romanov's Audio Tape entries that can be heard in the Extras menu. When all three types are fully collected, a collectible achievement is rewarded.
The remaining Easter eggs vary from minor exploration discoveries, to listening to secret dialogues, secret cutscenes, and even absurd events happening in the background. Almost all of them reward players with achievements if they are discovered and count towards the 100% completion.
DLC[]
Rooftops 2 received a DLC update with a new spin-off map called Rooftops Revisited that isn't part of the plot. However it adds more replayability to the mod as it's a long full of action level where players can enjoy extensive gunfights using Rooftops 2 weapon arsenal. The map also features an arcade mode exclusive to that map.
