Rooftops Campaign
Rooftops Campaign is a Call of Duty 4 Custom Singleplayer Campaign created by SPi. It's the first entry in the Rooftops Saga and where it all began narratively. The mod provides a brand new singleplayer experience with a new story and new characters in engaging gunfight scenarios and cool scripted sequences.
Levels[]
Plot[]
Rooftops Campaign takes place in a fictional universe independent from the original game's story, revolving around S.A.S. Task Force 99, which becomes involved in an undercover Russian operation in Italy.
Task Force 99 is under the command of Captain Steve "SPi" Mallory and is stationed in Western Greece. On October 13, 2011, the team receives a distress call from Agent Paul Emery, an old C.I.A. friend of the team. Paul was operating in Sicily, Italy, and was spying on the Russian forces under the command of General Grigori Romanov. Romanov is using a large abandoned town in Sicily to stage hundreds of his forces without anyone noticing.
After receiving Paul's distress call, Task Force 99 promptly departed for Italy. SPi, along with Loz, Pan, Alex, SV, and AV, deployed in the outskirts of the town. Loz, SV, AV, and the pilots stayed in the helicopter as backup. SPi, Pan, and Alex proceeded towards the town to conduct their investigation. As they approached the town, they encountered enemy forces and proceeded to the town. The enemy forces appeared to be on high alert, sweeping the town in search of someone. Upon entering the town, they stumbled upon an enemy officer and two of his men interrogating a farmer who had chosen to stay in the town, unlike others who had evacuated, making him a witness and a suspect in the eyes of the enemy. SPi and his team hid, observing silently. The enemy officer, suspecting the farmer of hiding an American spy, killed him in cold blood.
Once the enemy left the area, SPi and his team moved into a garage, and observed enemy activity outside of the window where a house yard is located. They see several hostile forces as well as the enemy officer who killed the farmer arriving. A prestigious figure can be seen outside of the house opposite the street. It's General Romanov who informs the enemy officer, calling him by his name, Major Misha, about having found Paul and interrogating him to find out of he has revealed information about his activity in Italy. But then another enemy soldier drops by informing General Romanov about the road checkpoint guards being dead. General Romanov, Major Misha and most of the enemy forces move out to investigate.
That gives SPi and his team a chance to take out the few remaining enemies and enter the house to find Paul. SPi enters the house while Pan and Alex stay outside. SPi slowly moves through the dark houses hallways and finds a room from which he can hear voices. Then a gunshot can be heard and SPi kicks the door open finding two enemies and Paul. After taking out the two enemies, SPi checks on Paul but he was shot dead. Then he contacts Pan through the radio informing him that he found Paul and that he's dead. But Pan tells SPi that they have been surrounded and they have to surrender and that there is no way out for SPi. SPi tries to contact Loz through the radio but he doesn't get any response. Then he gets out of the house surrendering along with his team with General Romanov lecturing them as for how futile their attempt against him is.
A few hours go by, and the team has been moved downtown to be interrogated. SPi was interrogated by General Romanov himself about what he knows on Romanov's operations. Romanov leaves SPi alone with one guard, and SPi manages to escape after taking out the guard. SPi finds and rescues Alex and Pan and they try to find a way out of the town. They find an enemy HQ and they collect an enemy laptop containing critical information about the enemy. As they exit the HQ they stumble upon Loz, SV and AV who came in to find them. However they were chased up to that point so they couldn't escape by just going back the way Loz came. Loz contacted their helicopter and they arranged a Landing Zone on the rooftops nearby, so the team started to make their way to the rooftops.
The town is full of enemy forces, as it basically is a large military station of General Romanov's forces. As the Task Force 99 moved in, they had to fight every inch of the way as enemies were popping out of every street corner and rooftop building. After a long fight through the streets and the rooftops, the team managed to secure the Landing Zone and the ally helicopter arrived. The team had split up earlier with SV and AV being on a rooftop overlook and the rest of the team being separated. Once SV and AV boarded the helicopter an enemy attack helicopter showed up chasing the ally helicopter away leaving them no chance to rescue the rest of the team. Task Force 99 pilot, Michael told Loz through radio that they would come back the next day to save them. SPi, Loz, Pan and Alex were stranded in the town and hid in the sewers for the night.
The next day, the team got out of the sewers and found themselves in the large city square of the town which is filled with enemy forces as the city hall is the main HQ of the whole operation. Michael contacts Loz through radio and tells him that they won't be coming unless they neutralize three ZPU anti air guns in the city square so they can safely rescue them. SPi and Loz set a plan of attack, and they split up with SPi and Pan getting on a balcony to provide sniper support for Loz and Alex who will storm the city square and take out the ZPU anti air guns. After a long fight, all three guns are down, and the team has regrouped in the city square. They receive heavy fire from the city hall, when suddenly they see their ally helicopter arrive, and this time it was equipped with a Mark19 grenade launcher operated by AV, saving the day.
The city square was clear and the team was ready to be saved. However Loz and SPi decided to postpone their rescue and breach into the barricaded enemy city hall and main headquarters to find out what this whole thing was about. The team breaches into the city hall, clearing out hordes of enemies and finally end up in the main office where Major Misha is. They capture Major Misha and start interrogating him about the location of General Romanov and what this whole military operation is about. Major Misha doesn't break, and SPi starts beating him. Suddenly a phone starts ringing. It's Major Misha's cell phone. SPi answers and it's Romanov saying that he arrived in his nuclear base. SPi hangs up and kills Major Misha.
SPi and Loz are over the main computer investigating enemy maps that indicate that the Russian undercover town in Italy wasn't the only one. They found another secret base in Greece. Only this time, it holds a nuclear missile silo. The team uploads data from the main computer to their network, and gets on the rooftop of the city hall where their helicopter just landed to retrieve them. Before they get on board, SPi stops and goes back to take Major Misha's cell phone as he thinks it's going to be useful for their investigation. As he heads to the staircase, the enemy attack helicopter shows up.
Michael takes off leaving SPi alone on the rooftop. SPi finds a rocket launcher crate on the rooftop and starts shooting at the enemy helicopter eventually taking it out. As the enemy helicopter was crashing, it went over SPi's who was standing on the glass roof of the city hall, and the vibrations from the helicopter broke the glass causing SPi to fall through the glass ceiling landing safely on a couch. As he recovered, enemy soldiers show up from outside of the city hall chasing SPi all the way to the roof. On the roof, SPi jumps off the edge of the building and lands on the back ramp of the ally helicopter successfully being rescued.
The team departs Sicily and heads back to base safely, with the threat of Romanov and his nuclear base still looming over their heads.
Gameplay[]
Rooftops Campaign gameplay stays true to the Call of Duty formula, with several combat sequences and gunfights, plenty of innovating and cool scripted sequences, a few experimental stealth sequences, and more interesting features for players to enjoy.
The mod starts slowly by having an introduction level to get players familiar with a few characters and the basic plot. It also involves a short shooting range. Later on, there's an experimental stealth sequence that requires players to clear out an enemy checkpoint. After a series of scripted dialogue sequences, the more combat heavy sequences of the mod are taking place.
The second half of the mod is full of combat sequences and heavy gunfights with a variety of weapons and lots of enemy npcs to fight against.
The last level involves a sniper sequence, where player has to provide cover fire on an ally npc. Taking out enemies slowly will cause the ally npc to die thus failing the mission.
The latter parts of the mod include interior gunfights and a revealing cutscene near the end, giving away more context on the plot.
The ending has player duel against an enemy attack helicopter using some rocket launchers, and later running away from enemies to reach the back ramp of the ally helicopter similar to Call of Duty 4 Crew Expendable level.
Easter Eggs[]
The mod includes a plethora of Easter eggs for players to explore and discover. The main Easter egg of the mod involves a series of collectable items that once collected, you get radio dialogue from a special Easter egg character called Antonio Sartini giving more background information about the plot. In reward for completing this Easter egg, player has access to a whole new bonus level unrelated to the main storyline.
Other Easter eggs have players collecting various other items, like gold bars, journals, and hard drives. The latter two provide information about certain character's bio.
Besides those, there are a few other trivial Easter eggs that are of less importance.
Remaster[]
The Remaster version is a huge overhaul of the mod doing the following:
- Entirely re-scripting everything thus revamping the whole experience.
- In-depth re-optimization of the geometry of the maps.
- All weapons are replaced with Rooftops 2 weapons.
- Better character models to keep consistency with Rooftops 2.
- Heavy use of cool new animated sequences.
- Re-done and better quality dialogues and cinematics.
- Skip system for long dialogues and cinematics.
- UI and HUD from Rooftops 2.
- New progression system and achievement unlockables, just like Rooftops 2.
The Remaster stays true to the original with the exclusion of one minor and insignificant Easter egg and the implementation of a brand new major one.
Finally, it includes a new version of the Rooftops Revisited level with the theme changed to WW2 and a Gun Game mode exclusive to that map. Rooftops Remastered release date is set on May 5, 2024.
